I probably missed more shows than I caught this year (I missed all of Troika, for instance), so this is by no means a definitive list of bright spots. But of the shows I did see, these were the highlights:

• Harvey Milk at Local 506, February 27
• Bonnie Prince Billy at Carrboro ArtsCenter, May 28
• Double Dagger at the Pinhook, June 18
• Japandroids at Local 506, July 6
• any/all XXMerge, but particularly Lambchop, Pipe, Erectus Monotone, Superchunk, and American Music Club
• Megafaun (and Bowerbirds) at Carrboro ArtsCenter, August 22
• Yo La Tengo at Carolina Theatre, September 18
• Lambchop (twice - XXMerge & then @ Duke in November)
• Bustelo & D-Town Brass at the Pinhook, October 23

I'm surprised & intrigued to see that THREE of those shows were at the Carrboro ArtsCenter.
